Most Valuable Indian

The DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) has become one of the most successful tournaments of its time. The big hitting, fast-paced nature of the Twenty20 game made it a sure-shot success in India. Teams comprising Indian domestic and international cricketers have been part of this 44-day extravaganza. The good thing about the IPL is the presence of four international players, but that does not in any way take away the sheen from the 7 Indians playing in each side.

It is somewhat disappointing that the highest run scorer and highest wicket taker so far are foreign players but there are some Indians who have also made their presence felt in the IPL, making the whole nation sit up and take notice of them in the bargain. Let's look at the Most Valuable Indians in the tournament so far:

Gautam Gambhir: He played well in the ICC T20 World Cup last year and his performances in the IPL just go to show how much he likes this format. The second highest scorer of the tournament and the first to reach 500 runs in the IPL has not even scored a single century. But 523 runs from 13 matches with five half-centuries will surely make him one to look out for in the next season.

S Sreesanth: Sreesanth has proved what a deadly bowler he can be if he just keeps focus and does his job. The second highest wicket taker of the tournament has got 19 scalps from his 14 matches. Though a little expensive, his line, length and accuracy have consistently awarded him with wickets.

Piyush Chawla: Prior to the IPL, there was only talk of Piyush Chawla filling in Anil Kumble's shoes. But with his performances, Chawla has shown exactly why he is such a deadly spin bowler even in a game where slow bowling is usually taken to the cleaners. 17 wickets in 14 matches means he is tied as the third best bowler of the tournament.
Rohit Sharma: That Sharma could bat in this format of the game was never a doubt in anyone's mind. Along with Gilchrist, he was the only consistent batsman in the Deccan Chargers line-up and performed time and again despite losing twelve matches in the IPL. He ended up with 404 runs from 13 matches.

Shikhar Dhawan: He was a relative unknown before the series began but the way he handled himself in the presence of Twenty20 veterans, Sehwag and Gambhir meant his consistency did not go unnoticed. Delhi would always manage to lose one wicket and still win the game due to the heroics of this man who averages almost 49 runs per game.

Yo Mahesh: Mahesh is another bowler who was a relative unknown before the IPL began. No one even gave him a chance playing in the same team as Glenn McGrath and Mohammad Asif. But this Indian emerged with better bowling figures than most of his teammates. He is the sixth highest wicket taker of the tournament with 14 wickets in 11 matches and a best of 4/36.

Howcome there is no mention of the big hitting Yousuf Pathan?
So far he seems to very dependable & persistent. He seems to be immune to pressure although he never seems to have an International outing!
I am not aware of his price tag but I am pretty sure he has earned every penny if not more.

I am surprised there is no mention of the Yusuf Pathans, the Asnodkars & the Venu Gopals who have contributed immensely to their teams. We have all witnessed thier consistant often stellar performances. In fact we can safely conclude Yusuf & Asnodkar are the two main characters in Rajastan Royals suceess story !!

Dear All Board Members

Please do not treat saurav, rahul and others like door mats. Those people who have played cricket should atleast understand that this is not the way to treat the seniors.
Now even virender is being targeted. Supporting Dhoni is of no use, he is not able to represent the youth of the nation or carry himself the way saurav, sachin and rahul has done. Let them have a graceful exit. IPL is such a big hit, i am sure you guys will gain more favour and be supported by the public if such things are handled with care

There really should be some credit given to Yosuf and Irfan Pathan. Another outstanding revelation would be Rohit Sharma and yet no mention of him.

Are the ratings done blindly ? How can the pathan brothers speacially YUSUF PATHAN,,ROHIT SHARMA,VENU GOPAL,,ABHISHEK NAYYAR...have been ignored .....Its not only the total runs & wickets , the small perfomance at a crucial innings should also be considered .

Why should it be disappointing that the highest scorers were foreign? IPL was supposed to unite cricketers from different countries; just because India is the host doesn't mean they have the right to be "disappointed" in the success of foreign cricketers!

IPL has proved that if the team with big names will not work out in this format.Every single indivisual has to stem up more than the expectation and more importantly live upto it and prove it, which most of our senior players could not deliver. The youngsters have really taken up the challenge and raised the standard of the game to a different level.

No list like that can be a fair judgment without mentioning of Yusuf Pathan after what he has shown in IPL.
This guys is amazing for his limited exposure to a higher level of International Sports- He got the confidence, maturity, skill set and a big heart just like any big hitting Aussie.
I personally hope to see him more in International outfit.

A real find for India, he came into the tournament with very less number of firstclass experience,as a fact most of them don't know him at all, yet he proved himself as a match winner both with ball(majorly) and bat.No doubt he is the highest wicket taker for CSK and also he is the highest wicket taking bowler among the players who are yet to play for the nation.

If you can't notice Yusuf let me give you an idea.
The guy is taller than most tall Indians probably 6'4" plus, can hit the ball harder than any other Indian player and has calm and confidence of a true pro.

I hope in this day and age people do not hold there opinions based on race or religion.

In all fairness A.Nair and Y.Pathan are to be mentioned too. Yusuf seems to have what it takes to match with his Australian team mate. Just looking at his batting it shows how he matches from head to head toe to toe with Shane Watson's batting. Wish to see some exciting stuff from him in at least one dayers. Hope the Indian selectors take a real notice of him.

For me its DHONI, Mahendra singh Dhoni.
Look his team...the batting strength is not so deep..last two matches the bowling came good with the presence of Entini n all.....but still..his presence made the difference...and he lead his team to the finals...its not a big surprise....chennai team who bet for DHONI before the IPL start..made it a great success...and now they are harvesting from it...

yusuf pathan : all other players like gambhir ans srreesanth have international experience , but yusuf pathan is the most explosive batsmen comparing any other in the one day squad and plus he is sensible and play as per the demand says.
he is hardest hitter of the ball. i think now its time to say good bye to sehwag, and ganguly and dravid, playing internationally will groom him and will be more dangerous in future .

Whoever made this report has forgotten Yousuf Pathan. Most of the team members of the top teams have performed well under pressure. Hopefully BCCI politics minimize with the exposure to so much talent that was not seem by public in a large country like India and always the people were given a raw deal.

This is so disappointing not to see YKP name not mentioned. He was a very consistent player right from the beginning till the end. What is really disappointing is, it seems so apparent to ordinary person like me but someone who get paid to write are either not fit to see or way too bias to do their job.

There were quite some good players but Yusuf Khan Pathan stood mile apart from them all.

It was amazing to see someone local not known to the rest of the Cricket Playing World had such an immense talent to showcase right along his mighty Australia mates, just that alone was a strong enough reason to mention his name let alone his confidence, skill and execution has been totally ignored.

He seems to be another humble but ruthless player who stand and deliver when needed just like Jaysuria, but of course Jay has all the experience in the world and Yusuf did it without it, giving the notion that best is yet to come. I wish him the best & hope to see him more Internationally.

hey you dint mention Yusuf Pathan...how come??? I think he is one of the best findings for INDIA in this IPL. Remember his innings, the last one in finals...earlier he was playing slowly just because it was required at that situation. People who think he can only hit, so they should change their views. He can hit, he can smash the ball outside the ground for 110 meters but he can also play with singles, doubles. In the last innings of this IPL at a time he was playing at 20(23 balls) only taking singles and doubles and finished his innings at 59(38 balls).

My Vote goes for him.

Yusuf, Swapnil, Gony had to be mentioned in all fairness. There are other good one also.

People mentioning Dhoni, Dravid etc should realize that this article was abount young talent and not the one who are already known for their talent.

I did see Yusuf, Swapnil, Gony coming good out this tournament, there were other good players too but in all-around performance Yusuf and in bowling Gony could be the next level stars.

Before writing this someone should have run some analysis to show the reasoning behind the enumeration of the mentioned players.
There was no doubt many good names to mention but Yusuf was definitely on the top for providing entertainment through his cricketing skills.
Swapnil was another great local unknown entertainer & so was Gony & others.

You should have done a better job writing this or should have left it alone.

IPL should learn from RR and find better professional people in every department- not only the players.

I agree with many others. This article could have been better off mentioning the new comers the unknown to the world. The international players you mentioned were already known to people.
It could have been much better off, mentioning the likes of Yusuf Pathan, Swapnil, Gony & others. I hope that was just a case of rather over looking than anything else.

It was great to see Chennai in final and if you really see they should all be treated as MVIPs. This is nothing to take away from any other players that were too played like MVIP.

The interesting thing could have been, if someone had equated the price of the young players to see the weight of their contribution/dollar paid, than also add the entertaining points to the equation to see who earned what points to become MVIP.
Making a list like that could have been a better approach to enumerate the players.

The BAG-IND-PAK Tri-Series would be a good platform to see how everyone equates to their billing if given a chance. Hope to see explosive performances from all the Pathans

Reply #100 on : Wed June 18, 2008, 10:59:16
One tour is not enough to make any assumption. There has to be at least three series that any player should be given to settle down. But in the past there are number of player took some time to get off a good start. There are many players like YKPathan and MGony that seems to have true potential and it is simply not fair to taunt on them just after their first outing. I am sure they and other good ones will come across as winners on numerous occasions.

T-20 & ODIs
Reply #103 on : Thu June 19, 2008, 12:26:01
T-20 performance cannot be taken for granted in other formats.

As it has been very apparent how local gully cricket in Indopak can be exciting but the same team cannot perform always like that in other formats

In short there would be number of occasions for the new comers to show their skills.
